About
Folk and garage punk meet with feminine force
Brighton’s The New Eves conjure a tempest of feminine sound from its epicentre.
Despite only forming in 2021, The New Eves are already being lauded as Brighton’s most promising musical prospect due to their ceremonial live performances and mythic approach to music-making. The multi-disciplined, multi-instrumentalist quartet comprised of Ella Russell (drums, flute, vocals), Nina Winder-Lind (cello, guitar, vocals), Kate Mager (bass) and Violet Farrer (violin, guitar) have forged an innovative fusion of sound, blending folkloric stylings with retro-indebted garage-punk pep that permeates with feminine force.
They initially got together after their separate music projects dissolved in one way or another, the four band mates lying on Violet’s bed deciding together to embark on a new opportunity to do things themselves, in their own idiosyncratic way, at their own behest. Not long after they were jamming at Under The Bridge Studios beneath Brighton’s central train station, each player recognised the genuine alchemy of their talents, merging their individual influences that ranged from Patti Smith to The Raincoats, Nirvana to Led Zeppelin. That night The New Eves were born.
It’s a similar unbridled creative energy that they’ve transplanted on to their live shows. Employing their panoply of instruments at any given gig, The New Eves have turned the cosiest of venues into a ritualistic rally of feminine spirit without hesitation throughout their hometown. News travelled fast, with the four-piece soon finding themselves in the thriving scenes attached to The Windmill in Brixton and The George Tavern in Stepney Green.
In London, they befriended the sprawling collective known as Broadside Hacks, who would go on to co-produce The New Eves’ 2023 debut two-track EP, Original Sin / Mother, along with Slow Dance Recordings.
Taking little time to capture lighting in a bottle, the band headed to Homeward Recording Studios during the summer of 2022 with their first single ‘Mother’ being released the following January. The first song the band conjured collectively, ‘Mother’ muses over the physical and metaphysical links between mother and child, complete with primal punk chants.
‘Original Sin’, on the other hand, feels more like the band’s origin story laid out on record. Conceived by Nina during a solitary walk along Brighton beach one stormy night, The New Eves’ confronting second single examines what it means to be a woman, and the conflict that naturally falls at their feet. In their own words, the song is “an exploration of the liminal space between girl and woman, innocence and sin, lust and shame.”
While only releasing two singles, The New Eves’ live sets have started a word-of-mouth swell of interest, with 2024 shaping up to be a momentous year for the four-piece with shows at Moth Club in London, Belgrave Music Hall in Leeds, as well as sets at festivals like London Calling, Ritual Union in Bristol, Wide Awake in the capital once more, and The Great Escape on home turf.
