The Heavy Heavy named one of Ticketmaster's Breakthrough 2023 artists
“Our sound? The Rolling Stones meets The Mamas & The Papas” replied Brighton-based friends and lifelong musicians Georgie Fuller and Will Turner when asked to describe what the music of their band, The Heavy Heavy, can be compared to. Most bands would be irked about having to name such comparisons, but The Heavy Heavy wear their influences on their sleeve. It’s precisely this which makes their era-bending brand of retro-rock so timeless.
There’s a ten year window - roughly 1965-1975 - in which Fuller and Turner say their favourite ever albums were produced, and it's that shared obsession with the likes of the aforementioned as well as Led Zeppelin, Aretha Franklin, Bob Dylan, Otis Redding, The Beach Boys, and Janis Joplin that brought the two together. The pair cherry-pick the key ingredients of songs that they perceive transforms them into modern classics, and conjure a gloriously bucolic sound that hits somewhere between psychedelia, folk, blues, acid rock, and sunshine pop.
Evoking former greats isn’t their only aim however, rather use these musical touchstones to breathe new life into those genres of music that defined the era. But Turner was chasing this unified sound for the best part of decade through various groups that eventually disbanded or lost momentum. By chance, Fuller would appear as a guest vocal on his former band’s track which opened the door for new ideas and a shared ambition which they realised with the first song they worked on, ‘Go Down River’, a track that has since become their most recognised.
It took a little over two and a half years for The Heavy Heavy’s 2022 debut EP, Life and Life Only, to come together. Despite not having even toured yet, ATO Records caught wind of their hypnotic output and signed them up, joining the likes of Nilüfer Yanya, Alabama Shakes and psych-soul revivalists Black Pumas on the label’s roster. Their first ever tour would be as main support on the latter’s 2022 European tour, playing to sizable venues across the continent and picking up tips from the main act, as well as confirming their own headline shows at New York City's Mercury Lounge and Los Angeles' Troubadour later the same year.
The Heavy Heavy, now expanded to a five-piece, also recently appeared on CBS’ Saturday Morning TV show for a live performance of ‘Miles & Miles’, making headway with their Americana-tinged single.
Georgie Fuller and Will Turner have made remarkable progress in very little time. They’re now investing that motivation into their debut full-length album, currently working on and whittling down between 40 and 50 demos with their next effort slated for release in 2023.
