Primal punk-rockers with socio-political bite

Brighton trio SNAYX alchemise numerous sub-genres and sub-cultures in the name of bludgeoning earlobes, forging mosh pits in their wake and swiftly earning their place among the UK’s most promising DIY punk bands.

Fitting then, that the band attributed their origins to a shared love of the Amazing Snakeheads – and Buckfast – having witnessed them pulverise former Brighton venue The Haunt. After the incendiary Glasgow punks’ self-destruction, SNAYX future guitarist and singer Charlie Herridge and bassist Ollie Horner decided to fill the gap with their own high-octane outfit.

The band was merely an idea for months on end however, as the pair were too busy chasing mosh-pits around the city’s many gig venues. Until Hastings’ rockers Kid Kapichi asked the pair to support them at The Green Door Store. Their show was a ramshackle success, which kickstarted SNAYX’s trajectory.

From Brighton and Seaford respectively, Horner and Herridge both played in a variety of rockabilly, ska, punk, indie rock and Britpop-inspired bands before joining up. When they came together – firstly as a duo before the addition of drummer Lainey Loops – SNAYX’s musical output adopted a similarly open-minded approach when it came to music-making, blending elements of punk, hip-hop, funk, grime and mashing it all together. Imperious riffs were the primary focus however.

Ballsy debut single ‘False Friends’, released in 2021 on local label austerity records, indicated SNAYX were a fearsome force. The track propelled them into the same kinds of conversations as fellow DIY punk bands like Bob Vylan and Nova Twins – both of which they’d supported amid their independently arranged tours, and both of which ushered in a new era of socially-conscious artists from the UK’s underground.

After the release of their swaggering follow-up single ‘Cigarette’ in 2022, Charlie reflected on their community of like-minded musicians, saying that the mainstream success of uncompromising, independent bands “is really inspiring. It does give you this confidence. It really does feel like there's every opportunity to go from these grassroots spaces to the biggest stages going, without changing what you stand for.”

Based on their outspoken nature and riotous gigs, SNAYX aren’t lacking in confidence. 2023 EP, Weaponised Youth: Part 1 EP – which includes the explosive two-minute single ‘I’m Deranged’ – earned them high praise and comparisons to Soft Play and Royal Blood. But their self-released 2024 EP Better Days would establish SNAYX as a vital contemporary voice in British music, in what is an examination of a stifled society, and their own ennui slap-bang in the middle of it.

Taking cues from whip-smart lyricists like Sleaford Mods as much as forebears in Beastie Boys and The Prodigy, SNAYX toured Better Days throughout the remainder of the year, tearing up grassroots venues up and down the country with gigs confirmed Portsmouth’s Moonshine, Nottingham’s Bodega, Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff and London’s Village Underground that autumn.
