About
Supremely catchy alt rock with a hardcore edge
Militaire Gun have already forced an indent in Los Angeles’ alternative rock and hardcore punk scene with hefty musicality, melodic hooks and an on-edge sensibility that can’t help but command attention.
The lynchpin of Militaire Gun’s sound is the restlessness of frontman Ian Shelton. The quintet started life as a side project for the Regional Justice Center frontman when the opportunity for live performance ground to a halt during the pandemic. Compelled to purge his pent-up energy and frustrations into some form of music, Shelton aimed to record and release an EP in the autumn of 2020, resulting in the project’s first release, My Life Is Over.
It was this necessary urgency and reflex to create in all circumstances that propelled Militaire Gun in the beginning, but has come to define the band’s output and industry ever since. “I’ve always been the kind of person who’s very compelled to do things,” Shelton explained in an interview. “Everything suddenly becomes urgent, and that’s how I feel about songwriting – it’s just something I have to do when the inspiration comes.”
With mastermind Shelton providing the momentum, he recruited friends and local musicians Nick Cogan and William Acuña on guitar, Max Epstein on bass, and Vince Nyugen on drums, weaving together varied influences from Fugazi to Born Against. As a full five-piece band, Shelton set out to write, record, and release two EPs in 2021: All Roads Lead to the Gun and All Roads Lead to the Gun II. The EPs marked Militaire Gun’s shift from the violent muscularity of Shelton's former group into a vessel for exploring more melodic inspirations, including The Beatles and Britpop.
Militarie Gun toured their three EPs heavily, and were invited to support for a host of peers throughout 2022, including Show Me The Body, Viagra Boys, Shame, MSPAINT, Touché Amore, Angel Du$t, and Citizen. Loma Vista Recordings swiftly snapped up the band off the back of their explosive live sets, re-releasing the All Roads Lead To The Gun EPs, along with four new tracks, as one full-length in 2022. That same year, the band teamed up with buzzworthy one-man power pop outfit Dazy on the single 'Pressure Cooker', which ended up on a Taco Bell commercial in the US.
Preceded by the propulsive single ‘Do It Faster’, Militarie Gun released their debut album Life Under The Gun in summer 2022. The primal yet pop-infused record won plaudits from numerous publications, and established Militaire Gun as alternative music’s most exciting hardcore talent since Turnstile.
Primed to be one of 2023's breakthrough bands, Militarie Gun celebrated the release of Life Under the Gun with memorable appearances at festivals and in-stores across the summer, as well as a prestigious support slot with revered post-hardcore quartet Rival Schools.
