Indie singer-songwriter on healing journey of self-expression

Music has the power to heal, be it emotional trauma from the past or the crippling fears for the future, or simply offering sanctuary when we need it most. That’s the precise quality the songs of storytelling indie singer-songwriter Liang Lawrence possess, using her diaristic songwriting as means of therapy by confronting life and love’s uncomfortable truths.

By the time that Liang Lawrence turned eighteen years old, she’d nearly lived in as many countries. Due to her father’s job, she’d lived in a multitude of places including New Zealand, Malaysia, Kuwait, and San Francisco, struggling to find any semblance of security in her own personal life as she was whisked away as soon as she cemented connections. The one connection she could rely on however, was to music.

Living out a multicultural upbringing – while unstable due to her family’s frequent relocations –enabled Liang to learn from a vast array of other people’s stories and experiences. Not wanting to rock the boat when it came to expressing her fears and challenges to her family, she turned to music to express her truest emotions. “I think I never wanted to feel like a bother or a burden expressing just how overwhelming things felt, but the music was able to turn something I thought would be annoying and difficult into something lovely and easy for people to hear.” Once she’d expressed herself, it was out in the universe now.

Lawrence possessed a preternatural talent for sumptuous melodies and soul-searching lyricism, honing her craft in her bedroom before eventually opening up a portal to the world with her ukelele. Whilst completing an undergraduate degree in Biology at the University of Exeter, Liang balanced songwriting with her studies, taking to TikTok to showcase her open heart along with her first self-released single ‘Santa Cruz’ in 2020.

Within a matter of months, she’d amassed over 100k followers, some of which were the illustrious likes of Joe Jonas and Sabrina Carpenter. Record label FRTYFVE offered Liang a record deal just weeks after she graduated.

Working with established groups like Flyte and Fickle Friends behind the scenes, Liang released her first three singles as a bonafide musician - ‘Undercover Martyn’, ‘Turns Out’, and ‘(not) a love song’ which instantly resonated and remains her most streamed song on Spotify to date. The latter of which also appeared on Liang’s 2023 debut EP, letters to myself, which saw Lawrence draw lofty comparisons to beabadoobee, The Japanese House, and even boygenius.

As her stock continued to rapidly rise, Liang returned to her songwriting sanctuary to channel her emotions in real-time, exploring the difficulties of personal growth amid modern femininity, artistic development, and vanquishing toxic traits that dogged her. The result of which was her 2024 follow-up EP, What’s Dead And Gone, a marker of Lawrence’s flourishing maturity as a personal and professional individual. Spearheaded by the lead single ‘Eulogy’, which sees a whispering yet defiant Liang mourn a previous relationship, the song had already gone viral before she’d even hit the studio.

With the singer-songwriter set up to connect with a truly huge audience, she plays London’s OMEARA in the Autumn of 2024.
