About
An open-hearted songwriter taking the world by storm
Countless young artists send their music into the ether of the internet with no idea or hope of the success that might follow. That’s exactly the approach Kevin Kaarl took when he began casually uploading his music to YouTube out of boredom more than any firm intent, to become the nostalgia-laden, folk-rock phenomenon he’s rapidly transformed into.
Kaarl was born in the northern Mexican town of Meoqui, Chihuahua, on 15 May 2001 alongside his twin brother Bryan. Given the modest population of just 70,000 people in the town engulfed in farms and uniquely-minded northerners (norteños), the twins stayed in each other’s pockets growing up as they played, learnt and discovered music together. They began to perform together from the age of eight, inspired by Chihuahua’s gentle pace and regional music. It’s this musical history that Kaarl lovingly absorbed and influenced his pensive but open-hearted songwriting, which he displayed as an 17-year old after the release of his debut self-released single, ‘Amor Viejo’, in 2018.
The following year saw Kaarl began to find meaningful success, though, with the release his debut album, Hasta del Fin Del Mundo. The LP included lead singles ‘Baby Blue,' ‘Colapso’, and ‘Vámonos a Marte’ – the latter of which racking up over 300 million streams on its own. Hasta del Fin Del Mundo established the hallmarks of Kaarl’s wistful, vulnerable lyricism as well as the three key pillars of his musical style: rich vocals; a longing acoustic guitar; and trumpet melodies brought into the mix from his brother.
Response to Hasta del Fin Del Mundo was overwhelmingly positive, and saw Kaarl’s social media following balloon into the millions. Though the singer-songwriter was a reluctant star, he swiftly followed-up with EP, San Lucas, in 2019, which further displayed the wisdom and wonder in his maturing music; it’s title track is another to hit almost 300 million streams. Kaarl’s sound got the attention of soul singer Leon Bridges, who snapped the Chihuahuan up for a glorious feature on his 2022 track, ‘Summer Moon’. But his most poignant and ambitious work to date was fast approaching.
2022 also saw the release of his sophomore full-length, Paris, Texas. Inspired by Wim Wenders’ 1984 film of the same name, the title encapsulates the inner journey Kaarl went on himself. In a recent interview he revealed: “The album is a story of someone who lost interest in himself and then rediscovered themselves. It makes you feel more human to know that someone who was lost was able to find themselves again.” The tender yearning, escapism and romance of his lyricism on tracks such as ‘te quiero tanto’ and ‘nunca te supe cuidar’ unpicks his own struggles with mental health and connected with audiences irrespective of language.
The following year Kaarl took his Paris, Texas tour worldwide, meeting rapturous demand in Madrid, Paris, and London, where he toured in the autumn of 2023, only weeks after the release of his single ‘mis compas tan aquí.’ While his folkier traditions remain, Kaarl explores alt-rock, dream-pop, and beyond.
