About
The Toronto R&B force adding raw lyricism and unconventional influences to the genre
Toronto-born singer-songwriter Jessie Reyez defines her genre as "Quentin Tarantino" – a unique yet apt description for what the artist does with the R&B genre. Subverting expectations, Jessie Reyez' R&B is laden with sharp lyricism and vocal stylings, and is unafraid to be messy, guttural and real. Born to Colombian parents, Jessie Reyez draws on her Colombian roots for influences, as well as genre-defying artists such as Frank Ocean, Amy Winehouse and Bob Marley.
After a string of singles between 2014 – 2016, Reyez released her debut EP, Kiddo, in 2017, alongside a short film Gatekeeper, which explored sexism and exploitation that Reyez experienced the music industry. Kiddo was longlisted for the 2017 Polaris Music Prize, and went on to earn Reyez the Breakthrough Artist Juno Award in 2018. Her following projects continue to garner critical acclaim, as well as recognition from artists across the industry – including DVSN, Lewis Capaldi, Eminem and 6lack.
Her 2018 EP, Being Human in Public, scored Jessie Reyez her first Grammy nomination for Best Urban Contemporary Album, which allowed Reyez to expand her sound and reach further – going on to play opening sets for Billie Eilish, and collaborating with JiD, A Boogie wit da Hoodie, Rico Nasty and more.
Now with two full-length albums under her belt – Before Love Came to Kill Us (2020) and Yessie (2022) – Reyez returns with her vulnerable, multi-genre soulful sound on her 2025 album Paid In Memories, and its accompanying world tour.
