Comedian Jenny Clare Hargreaves is best known by her stage name Jenny Eclair. Born in Malaysia in 1960, her family spent a few years in Berlin before settling in the English town of Lytham St Annes. The daughter of an army general who loved a good fart prank and a joker at heart from a young age, she first tried out the surname Eclair as a teenager while pretending to be French.
After studying at Manchester Polytechnic School of Theatre, Jenny joined a cabaret group called Cathy La Crème And The Rum Babies. She moved to London in 1982 and soon after not only met her life-long partner Geof Powell, but also began to pursue a career in comedy. In 1995, Jenny Eclair became the first woman to win Edinburgh Festival Fringe’s prestigious Perrier Comedy Award.
Along with live stand-up shows, the '00s saw her become a regular face on television. She developed and appeared in Grumpy Old Women from 2004 to 2007, and became a longstanding presenter on Loose Women. Jenny Eclair finished in third place on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here in 2010 and appeared on Celebrity MasterChef in 2012. Over the years she hosted her own radio show and starred in various theatrical productions.
Jenny Eclair toured her How to Be Middle Aged (Without Going Insane) show throughout 2017 in venues across the UK and as far afield as Australia, where she also performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
In addition, Jenny Eclair built a literary reputation across the release of six books. Since 1994’s non-fiction tome The Book Of Bad Behaviour, she’s penned several novels – from 2000’s Camberwell Beauty to 2015’s Moving – that are as heart-stirring as they are side-splitting. In July 2020, she released the Sunday Times bestseller Older And Wider – A Survivor’s Guide To The Menopause offering an irreverent and honest look at the menopause.
Hitting the age of 60, Jenny Éclair designed a new show to confront this decade of decrepitude. Called Sixty! (FFS!), she revealed it would cover everything from filling out online forms and having to scroll down endlessly for her date of birth to whether it’s a legal requirement to buy Nordic walking poles.
In 2024, Eclair announced a nationwide tour with a new autobiographical show. Covering topics from punk poetry, anorexia, being the first woman to win the Perrier Award and sleeping with men who looked like they lived under a carpet, with Jokes, Jokes, Jokes the comedian invites you to look back at what she can remember before she forgets everything.
