About
Jamie Lawson has had a long and winding career, from thankless years on the gigging circuit to becoming one of the biggest singer-songwriter breakouts of the 2010s. But he’s never stopped being the same starry-eyed everyman, a troubadour of everyday romance and warmth.
Born in 1975 in Plymouth, Lawson began his music career proper in 2003 with the release of his debut studio album, Last Night Stars. After seeing some modest success in Ireland, Lawson moved to Dublin, where he went on to release his second album, The Pull of the Moon, in 2010. The bruised, melancholic songs across these albums proved Lawson the kind of songwriter to hush a room; unassuming yet quietly breathtaking. In 2011, Lawson posted the single ‘Wasn’t Expecting That’ onto Youtube — a sweet, romantic tale told simply and unforgettably. The song became a sensation in Ireland after it was played on Today FM’s Breakfast Show, peaking at No.3 in the Irish charts that year. The same year, Lawson released his third album, Wasn’t Expecting That.
In 2014, Lawson was requested by Ed Sheeran to open an intimate secret show in Dublin. The same year, Sheeran brought Lawson along as the opening act on a UK and Europe arena tour. In 2015, Sheeran announced Lawson as the first signing to his new record label, Gingerbread Man Records, an imprint of Warner Music Group.
With the new label, Lawson re-released ‘Wasn’t Expecting That’ worldwide. It became a hit in several countries, reaching No.6 on the UK Singles Chart. Meanwhile, Sheeran brought Lawson on the Australia, New Zealand and North American legs of the X world tour. Shortly after, Lawson opened for One Direction on the UK/Ireland Take Me Home arena tour. In October 2015, Lawson released the full-length album Jamie Lawson, which debuted at No.1 on the UK Albums Chart.
In 2016, Lawson hit bigger venues on another headlining tour, followed by supporting Vance Joy across the United States on his Fire and the Flood tour. Lawson toured across the world for the rest of the year, including headlining tours in Australia/New Zealand and North America, and appearances at festivals such as Glastonbury and British Summer Time.
In September 2017, Lawson released his second album for Gingerbread Man Records, Happy Accidents. This album saw him expand his sound beyond his previous folk pop, including country accents on ‘Can’t See Straight’ and jazzy keyboards on ‘Don’t Say You Don’t If You Do’. In November, he supported James Blunt across UK and Europe arenas. In 2018, he headlined the Happy Accidents tour, and supported Ed Sheeran again on the enormous Divide tour. In 2019 came Lawson’s sixth full-length, The Years In Between, featuring arena-ready songwriting including celebratory lead single ‘The Answer’.
In 2023, Lawson returned to independent music with the self-release of new album, Little Weaknesses. It sees him stay focused on what he does best — warm, sincere and anthemic songwriting. Through November and December, he’ll tour through some of the UK’s most intimate venues.
