About
Finn Foxell named one of Ticketmaster's Breakthrough 2023 artists
West London’s Finn Foxell is doing alt-rap in his own way. Blending whatever styles speak to him in the moment, and collaborating with whoever inspires him, Foxell brings a sense of fun to the genre – along with one of the most devoted fanbases around.
Hailing from Shepherd’s Bush, Foxell grew up surrounded by music with a songwriter father and an older brother active in the grime scene. Having been penning lyrics since he was eight years old, in Year 11 he became a part of the Elevation Meditation collective, alongside the likes of Lord Apex, DJ-producer P-rallel, Xav, and Louis Culture, all of whom helped deepen the roots of Foxell’s musical education. Recording tracks on a mic under P-rallel’s bunk bed got things going, and Foxell would go on to drop the EP Stuck In Motion in 2018, a collaboration between him and Lord Apex that served as an introduction to many. The Talk Is Cheap EP followed in 2020, which included elements of hip-hop, trap, grime, rock and UK garage but also some jazz piano and Spanish strings, making it clear he was setting no limitations on his sound.
With 2021’s Alright Sunshine EP Foxell really came into his own, wanting to deliver a sunny collection that reflected the playfulness of his late teens and early 20s, something to put a smile on the faces of everyone who came expecting the opposite from urban music. Always aiming to capture something quintessentially British in the music he makes, the title was a nod to a phrase he finds himself dropping almost daily.
In late 2022 Foxell added another string to his bow by introducing punk guitars to the mix, presenting the anthem ‘Leaders’, which took aim at class, politics and the British social divide with another fresh mix of styles and sounds (“There’s a lot of frustration right now from all corners of our society except the top”).
In November 2022, Foxell closed out the year with another huge single – working with Casnova on ‘Won’t Let You Down’ to add house beats to the mix.
Always keen to work out of the box, Foxell is often hung with the “alternative rap” label as it covers at least some of what he sounds like. But while everyone else keeps on trying to pin him down, Foxell is confident that his music should keep on pushing him forward him, crossing boundaries and blurring lines as he handmakes his own scene.
