A Brighton-based alt rock duo with a bite
ARXX describe themselves as “Taylor Swift, if she only ever listened to Nirvana”. That’s a fair, if slightly oversimplified, assessment. Their pop hooks are strong, their bite is stronger; their storytelling is both dreamy and fiery at once. Add to that a dedicated DIY ethic, and they begin to look unstoppable.
The band, which consists of lead vocalist/guitarist Hanni Pidduck and drummer Clara Townsend, formed in Brighton in 2017 after meeting through their respective previous bands. They began writing incendiary garage-punk with a queer feminist perspective, leading to their 2018 debut EP, Daughters Of Daughters. Plenty of gigging followed, demonstrating their fun-loving yet face-melting live approach. True to their DIY outlook, in 2018 they landed a gig in support of Dream Wife by throwing a demo to the band on-stage. The same year, they also appeared at Rotterdam’s Left of the Dial festival.
The band headed out on their first UK+EU headlining tours in March and September of 2019. They followed that up in November of that year with the EP Wrong Girl, Honey, boasting a further refined sound on storming tracks such as ‘Iron Lung’. In early 2020, they played their biggest concert to that date supporting The Hold Steady at Bush Hall, as well as announcing they’d be appearing at The Great Escape 2020 (later cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). In August 2020, they received airtime on Radio 1 BBC Music Introducing with Huw Stephens.
In October 2020, after signing to Submarine Cat Records, ARXX released the single ‘Call Me Crazy’, which debuted a slicker, poppier sound. In 2021, they dropped another single, ‘Not Alone But Not With You’, and embarked on a UK tour in support of Black Honey and Phoebe Green, quickly followed by another one in support of Pillow Queens.
More music followed in 2022, including the sensual single ‘Deep’ which was accompanied by a remix EP featuring Annie, Alice Go and BOOMVISION. They also hit the road with Pillow Queens again, this time across mainland Europe. In October 2022, they released a new version of ‘Call Me Crazy’ featuring Pillow Queens.
ARXX’s debut full-length album, Ride Or Die, was released in March 2023. That month, the duo appeared at enormous venues across Europe supporting Yungblud, as well as going on to appear at Radio 1 Big Weekend and The Great Escape festivals.
