Norah Jones announces UK dates for November 2023

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Norah Jones has announced a UK tour for November, heading to Gateshead, Birmingham, Manchester, Glasgow and Bath before closing her run at London's Palladium.

With its twinkling piano line, a vocal melody that greets you like a loving smile and the pitter-tatter of brushed drum strokes that echo the rain outside, few early songs capture the sound and appeal of an artist's career so effectively as Norah Jones' 'Don't Know Why'. It was the opening track of the New York City-born artist's 2002 debut album Come Away With Me, though it had also featured on an earlier EP First Sessions, recorded around the time Jones had begun turning heads at her label, the historic jazz imprint Blue Note.

Jones had began to build a fruitful musical rapport with producer and engineer Jay Newland on the First Sessions. Jones was born to musical parents, Indian sitar maestro Ravi Shankar and dancer and concert producer Sue Jones, and later attended Booker T. Washington High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before majoring in jazz piano at the University of North Texas. In 1999 Jones would return to NYC and make her way as a lounge singer, collaborating with the likes of Peter Malick and Charlie Hunter. But the label believed Newland's guidance who help her refine her sound, which, though clearly suited late night jazz bars she sang from in her early days, also called for the door to be left open to let in a breeze of other sounds from America's rich popular music heritage.

Quickly etching out her own mark in this history, Come Away With Me was an instant and momentous success. Melding classic jazz and blues with elements of soul, 70s folk rock and country, the debut featured the likes of 'Turn Me On', 'Seven Years' and 'Feelin' The Same Way'. 'Don't Know Why' went on to win Song of the Year, Record of the Year and Best Female Pop Performance at the 2003 Grammys – which is to say nothing of the awards the record won itself. Today, it stands as one of the best-selling albums of all time, and in 2022 its 20 year anniversary was celebrated with a remastered and expanded version.

In the two decades since, Jones has since sold more than 50 million albums. Announced as one of Time's most influential people of 2004, that year the singer followed her debut with Feels Like Home, which featured the Grammy-winning 'Sunrise' and 'Creepin' In', a duet with Dolly Parton. In 2007 she followed this up with Not Too Late, a much more personal release that saw her write or co-write every song for the first time. 2009's The Fall saw Jones explore her own style of songwriting further, with many critics noting and praising a change in direction to a more dynamic pop sound.

This sound would expand to her most experimental work yet on 2012's Little Broken Hearts, which she recorded with producer Danger Mouse to help craft its wistful blues rock edge. The two had met while working together on Rome, a collaborative album in homage to the soundtracks of classic Spaghetti Westerns. A fan of collaboration, Jones had already released ...Featuring Norah Jones in 2010, which saw the artist pair with the likes of Foo Fighters, Willy Nelson and Outkast, as well as Foreverly with Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong in 2013.

Later releases such as Day Breaks (2016) and Pick Me Up Off The Floor (2021) saw Jones step back behind the piano, bolstered not only by a big band and orchestra but with years of experiences and stories that, however easy to listen to, remain carved with character.
